PhotoSynth (and SeaDragon) could challenge Google's Street View

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Am sure you must have looked at PhotoSynth tech preview and the ever famous video hosted on TED.com that talks about photosynth's features. You might be surprised to know that photosynth product is not an in house microsoft project rather was made possible via University of Washington and others. Here are some of the features of photosynth:

* walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle;
* seamlessly zoom in or out of a photograph even if it's gigapixels in size;
* see where pictures were taken in relation to one another;
* find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing;
* explore a custom tour or see where you’ve been; or
* send a collection to a friend.

Photosynth was further enhanced using the SeaDragon software that allows faster rendering and navigation. SeaDragon is a Seattle based company which was acquired by Microsoft in February 2007.
