Another Refresh problem with Vista

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

I had previously posted a number of screen grabs showing the problem with windows Vista's File Open Dialog Box. Today I found two related problems with windows explorer.

(1) Here you see a jpeg file, note the size in the status bar

(2) Select the file and refresh the explorer window. (you wont' see the bug if you don't select the file)

(3) Now note the size in the status bar. You'd see every time the window is refreshed the file size in the status bar doubles.

After a little bit of experimentation I found that the status bar does not auto-update the file properties.

For example if I edit the file in mspaint

I still see the old file size listed in the status bar. No don't click F5 or Refresh as it would double the size.

After finding all these bugsI feel that Vista still has some small issues that needs to be looked at.

[EDIT]

Here is the video of the same problem

I'm not so sure about this bug. I just tested it by creating an image, checking its size, refreshing, cropping it, refreshing. The size does exactly what I expect it to (stays the same except just after cropping).

Can you think of any reason WHY it would be happening on your machine?

Could be because I have disabled a couple of security services such as windows defender etc. I have also installed inf update utility with all the drivers straight from the manufacturer's website (not from notebook manufacturer i.e. HP). I would investigate more on this (I hope i would have time this weekend).
I have exactly the same problem on all my 4 Vista Ultimate 32bit computers. For example...
I select a 1GB file, refresh, select file again and now it is 2GB! Keep selecting and refreshing and the file size keeps on doubling like 1GB > 2GB > 4GB > 8GB > 16GB etc.
This doubling is an error in the status bar display which is VERY inconvenient and annoying. If this really doubled the file size every time I refreshed I would have run out of space on my 4 x 500GB drives on day one!!! I have disabled Defender and other MicroCrap too but I doubt if that is the cause.

I forgot to mention I also have another problem on ALL 4 machines too which I have searched Google, forums etc. and have not found ONE mention so nobody has noticed it?
Say there are a bunch of files in a folder and one or some filenames are long and I can't see the complete name because the end parts is out of view (end of explorer window). If I try to rename ANY file the whole bloody files scroll swoosh to the left and I can't see what I am renaming anymore until I maximize explorer. Happens on files/folders... very frustrating. What's all this about? Maybe I have a wrong setting? Thanks.

Hey guys, don't be so cuel! I heard the blogger died in a car crash so obviously he can't update! Let the guy rest in peace is my thought. Plenty of other decent blogs around so don't bother with a dead guy's one. Sheesh!
